Hiking tips for the Gastein valley
Walking time: circa 75 minutes.
The hiking trail starts at the Grüne Baum. From there, a steep trail leads over the south-facing slopes of the Poserhöhe with a breath-taking view on the valley head of Kötschach, on the glaciers of the Tischlergruppe, on the valley head close to Böckstein as well as the Gastein valley in northern direction.
As an alternative, you can follow the trail that leads to the Gamskar Café, and then take the marked path on the right, through the forest and over alpine pastures leading to the Poserhöhe – a very worthwhile destination with a delicious alpine snack and a little children’s playground!
Prossau (1.271 m)
Walking time: Grüner Baum – Prossau Alpenhaus, 1 ¼ h.
Just right in front of the main entry of Haus Hirt, on the left hand side, starts the path that leads to
the Grüne Baum (10-15 min.). From here, you walk on the Fahrstraße into the valley. The “Malerwinkel” with its romantic, old farmhouse in front of the suggestive scenery of the glaciers of the mountain range Tischlergruppe remains on your left. The Fahrstraße leads along the left waterside of the Ache, passes a memorial place that reminds of the avalanche desaster in the year 1951; cross the Ache and walk under the steep granite rock face of the “Himmelwand” (skywall). Through the high forest, you will see the pyramid of the “Grauer Bocksteinkogel” that dominates the valley. After about 30 minutes, walking time from the “Grüne Baum”, a path forks left leading to the Reedsee (lake). We do not deviate (to the lake) and follow the Fahrstraße up to the Alpenhaus Prossau. From here, we suggest to walk on for another 30 minutes to the end of the Kötschach valley – a rock basin, in which the numerous glacial waterfalls of the Tischlerkar stream.
